Dunkum and Sowell family collection [manuscript], ca. 1833-1893.

The collection contains materials of William Dunkum and his son-in-law Lewis Sowell and other family members of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia, consisting of letters, receipts, promissory notes and other legal and financial documents. Also included are materials relating to slavery such as bills of sale and lists of slaves, including those dispersed in William Dunkum's 1862 estate sale. Of interest is a lease from the University of Virginia to William Dunkum to farm the "college estate" land bequeathed to the University by Martin Dawson, 1837, and renewed 1840, 1842; and a carte-de-visite of Louis Sowell and a receipt wallet.
